Reading all these comments trying to explain what this song and album are about reminds me of what Martha Graham said when someone told her they did not understand a dance,
" I don't want you to undrstand it, I want you to FEEL it"

it should've been a single

The nice thing about songs like this is, even if the composer was thinking about something totally different, it can be very subjective & have a deep meaning of many different characters for many different people. Any way you hear this song (& all of The Ninth Wave, and really most of Kate's songs), it's beautiful & moving.

@Symphony--One possible --and very good--interpretation. But her imagery isn't always linear. I do realize the album as a whole is about the shipwreck, but the phrasing suggests other things for me. I'm a poetry geek, so I see a lot of things in this one. Haven't seen her give her own statement on it, so I think you have a good take.

@lixfer Actually, Kate has talked about the song. I'll send you a private message with the links.

@frisbeinstein: Actually, the "racing white horses" line isn't about whitecaps. The song is being "sung" by a lighthouse--the white horses are the circling beam of light, which lets the ships know it's not a buoy, but safe harbor.
Hauntingly beautiful...

@lixfer No, the song is about a young woman who has fallen overboard from a ship and now she is lying in the water waiting to be saved. The "white horses" are the waves. And the song is not being sung by a lighthouse. Please see my other comments on this video.
