I must've listened to Transfiguration of Vincent, my favorite album of his and one I'd recommend, a few dozen times before I finally really appreciated not just the songs, but the way they work together to tell a story throughout the album. You've just gotta be patient with his music, but it's well worth it.
@fladioist I'd say for all of those reasons you've listed (although I see them in a more positive light) is why I love M. Ward's music so much. It's his subtlety that makes his songs so beautiful. Because he doesn't make anything blatant, you just have to listen to his songs many more times than songs that for instance, you could like within the first few seconds of hearing it but quickly get bored of it because there's nothing more to it besides the catchy melody.
I just watched about 4 or 5 M. Ward videos and I'm trying to determine what it is that he is good at. Each song I have heard pretty much avoids any kind of substantial melody, is vocally absent, and the guitar playing seems as if he plays whichever chord comes to mind at that time while he is afraid to let you hear the instrument. I have tried very hard and I just don't get it. Someone help me out. Then let me know if anyone wants to go see Blind Pilot in Pittsburgh tonight.
I'm inclined to believe this being in Elliott Smith's honor. Just sayin'...

My heart just melted at this song. His voice is spectacular. Not to mention he is pretty easy on the eyes.
