My South African wife, who came to me late in life, is Jewish, and has spurred many new interests in me, one of which is a fascination for the many awesome accomplishments of Jewish artists. Marc Chagall, another of my favorites, was born in Belarus in 1887. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1906, where he studied for four years under artist Yehuda Pen. He went on to Paris not long after where he stayed until 1914. He flirted with the Soviet Revolution for a time, then turned his back on it in 1923 and returned to Paris. When the Nazis moved into France, Chagall and his family fled to the United States. He returned to France after the war and continued to paint, sculpt, and work with stained glass. He died in 1985, at the age of 97.

  • I so wish I could paint in this style. Chagall is like the Gem just beyond my fingertips. Ive been an artist for 30 years, and I still would be terrified, standing before my canvas planning to paint in this style.

"In dreams I fly, above the barn, with goats and violins, I want too much,"

  • Don't stop dreaming. That's half the battle for an artist, as you no doubt know by now!

  • Thank you so much for the encouragement. I so love many styles of Art, as I am an Art History Professor, but Chagall, with next to no education paints like nothing I know. It like Picasso said, it took me 10 years to learn to pain realism, but its taken a lifetime to learn to paint like a child.

I can do Da Vinci's sfmato style (not as well of course), I do a pretty good job at impasto like the impressionists, I can sorta emulate Van Gogh, but not very well at all.

  • I love the Picasso comment!

  • Chagall was incredible!...so good I got into your page. I see you've got good stuff, if you don't mind I'm gonna catch you, so I'll drop by....

  • Glad to meet you. I'll send you a friend invite.

    Cheers, John

  • Chagall is like the little chocolate morsel of the art world. So pleasing to look at, that you almost feel guilty.... He will always be king of gradient :)

  • Chagall c´est un grande....

  • I hope people know that he painted the ceiling in the Paris opera house. The effect is like an Easter egg because of the shape. It's so lovely.

  • Such a poetical...

  • Beautiful! Thank you!

  • My all-time favorite artist. In college I bought a Chagall poster for $5 without knowing who he was and pinned it to my bedroom wall. I stared at it every morning when I woke up and saw something new in it each time. Years later, I worked in an art gallery, where we had a hand-signed Chagall 1977 Louvre poster on consignment from one of our clients. On my birthday, the gallery owner handed it to me as a gift, and I almost did a back-flip. (I had it framed instead of pinning it to my wall.)

  • interesting
