Er.. Formula Student actually began over in the states, have a look on google for Formula FSAE, That's the original competition that began back in the states around the early 70s.

Formula SAE has its roots in Texas. Its earliest inception was at the University of Houston, where the competition was known as a "mini-indy" competition.
It lost steam in Houston but got a second wind from a group of students at the University of Texas at Austin, chartered by Dr. Ronald Matthews. The rules became less restrictive and the competition transformed into its modern guise.
It continued to evolve under the direction of Dr. Robert Woods at the University of Texas at Arlington.
