Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Pacific Locomotive Association, on the Niles Canyon Railway!
PLA's Robert Dollar # 3 and SP 5472 were run on March 13, 2011 for a photographer's special. It is great to see 5472 run through the canyon on the old Southern Pacific route. After a run down from Sunol courtesy of Robert Dollar, we found 5472 waiting for us in Fremont with cars in tow. Up close and in person that engine is really impressive. (The tracks sound a lot different with the big diesel on them!)
It was a gray day and threatening to rain, but thankfully the rain never quite materialized. My tripod managed to wreck the opening scene, but behaved fairly well after that. Well, except for me bumping it when I was trying to take stills in addition to filming. (Who needs the bridge shot, right?!) As they say, there is always next year! But if you can't wait, Pacific Locomotive Association's Robert Dollar # 3 (ALCO 2-6-2T) runs excursion trains on the Niles Canyon Railway most Sundays. Or, seriously - you can rent a train.
Personally, I would like to rent 2467 on a high speed run from Sacramento to Pleasanton...

  • Beautiful Video Quality! What Kind Of Camera Was This Shot With?

  • @Metracab123 Hello! Thank you for the kind comments. This was shot with a simple Kodak Zi8. Some of the previous videos were shot with the Zi8 and a Flip Ultra HD. Sadly, the Flip was hit with the SP2472 and took two tripod falls after that. (It did not survive the 3rd fall.)

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and your family!

  • Beautiful coverage!!!

Thank you very much! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and your family!

  • Thank you Mark. Great video. The Robert Dollar # 3 is beautiful and superbly maintained. Bravo for the shooting. Regards. Philippe

  • @PhilbruProduction Thank you! It was my first time with a new tripod, which was supposed to reduce "sticking" during pans. I think (hope) I am through the "learning curve" with this tripod, and it should help me next time.

  • Where do you park to see the bridge?

  • I haven't seen these ALCo Coffeepot Steamers for a few years. Great looking EMD SD9.

  • Excellent video. Added to my favorites.

  • @Blimpaccident You can also see me in the very end of your last video clip! I was the boy walking with the folded up tripod!
