@MrMontyBurnsDog I just read your comment on this video; I agree. You may want to to watch the opening scenes of the updated movie called On The Beach Part 1. If the rest of the movie doesn,t meet expectations... at least the the begining should cause one to think. Whats to prevent a serious conflcation escaltion with China ? I thinks its possible but What are your thoughts ?

To all those watching this video; I have originally thought this was a great world comes to a end movie but now especially in this scene... The actor Fred Astarie is speaking deep truth prophetic words " peace be maitained by weapons no peoples would dare use " Hmm !! How the war on terror ? My cab driver from Eygpt tells , via family conversations he shares, the US is hated by many Middle Eastern citizens. What Do You Think ?

So I'm almost done reading the book, and is there anywhere to watch this online?
Because I'd like to watch it after I finish the book.

This was Fred Astaire's first dramatic role and I'm sorry that he had not done more. He was great!

Hi Skendrii, the crew said in the movie they wanted to head back towards the States but as the radiation poisoning was already taking effect, it was doubtful if they would make it there

In the 1959 Movie, I believe Gregory Peck said something like "The men wanted to try to get back home." I take that to mean that they were going to see how far they could get before they were too sick to operate the vessel. Regardless of whether or not they made it back, they probably would have ended up committing suicide to escape their agony. In the original novel, they sunk the sub off the coast of Australia.
-
One question...at the very end, when the crew of the Sawfish said that they wanted "to go home" and the sub went under for one last time, were they headed back to their home port, or were they actually going to commit suicide somehow?

This IS an excellent thought provoking film. I have to confess I usually give black and white films a miss but when this one started I was glued to the screen all the way.On The Beach has the darkest story I have ever seen and superb acting especially from Astaire whom I always thought couldn't do anything more than sing and dance a bit.Very convincing characters and ending
