Sometimes what's old becomes new again. It happens in music, fashion, even eye care. Optometrists at Mayo Clinic are using a type of lens originally developed in the late 1800s for some people who can't wear normal contacts. They're called scleral lenses and they're helping many folks with bad vision see.

  • I have to wear one because of limbal stem cell failure. i wont take it out it hurts to much. so i go once amonth, and drs do it. i've had it on for 1.5yrs. my vision is better than it was.

  • i wore these on both eyes for 8 years until i had a duel cornea graft, good riddance

  • great for cosplay man...

  • theyre a hassle in the morning... and a hassle at the end of the nigt lol.. but comfortable during the day

  • Dr. Schornack-Pg 1: Although one might expect that a larger lens would be even less comfortable than a traditional corneal (smaller) lens, the opposite is actually true for most patients. The cornea is highly sensitive tissue, and smaller lenses rest directly upon it. Scleral lenses don’t actually touch this sensitive corneal tissue. Instead, they rest upon the less-sensitive conjunctiva. Furthermore, the edge of the eyelid passes over the edge of smaller lenses with every blink.

  • Dr.Schornack–Pg 2: Pts who begin to wear corneal lenses frequently say the sensation caused by the interaction between the lens and eyelids is quite noticeable, particularly when first wearing these smaller lenses. Scleral lenses are so large that they rest well beyond the edges of the eyelids, and so the sensation caused by the lens/lid interaction is minimal. Some initial awareness of scleral lenses is normal. However, patients tend to adapt very quickly to the feeling of the lens on the eye.

  • @macdisciple what is the level of comfort? right I'm wearing soft contact lenses (40% vision), and my doctors recommeded scleral lenses (keratoconus patient too)

  • I have been wearing scleral lenses for 4 months because of keratoconus. I cannot wear glasses or RGP or soft lenses. Fit is extremely important, otherwise you may have blurry vision and discomfort. My lenses were custom manufactured for my eyes by Boston Foundation for Sight.

  • iI know you can wear scleral contact lense in some extreme sports
