Alternativly, it could have left him with brain damage, which would explain a great deal of his behaviour in the movie.

This scene is the olny reason I watched star trek..just to see Jimmy bennett

Well let's assume this is a movie so...no ones cares about you're stupid math and science to find out if he would really die or not....besides in JIMMY BENNETT...(aka) the HOTTEST guy in the univers...just saying

You may find this amusing. I am currently involved in an Honors Physics class that is studying movie physics, and we had an assignment where we had to find some terrible scene and explain why it's not possible. You literally just saved my ass. I wanted to use this scene, but I wasn't sure which formula(s) I needed to use. We just started in on Newton's Laws, so thanks!

Jame's T.Kirk always cheats death. How and why how knows but the laws there show differently so please don't even try it. He would have needed a Jet pack that really had small jets that put out a force of 46m/s just to save his hide thats my safety margine. BUt yeah he should have died. :)
