  • New budgie owner here with a question for veteran budgie owners. When the budgie flaps around the cage and jumps from perch to perch erratically, is it playing or stressed? My new budgie has been here for three days now so I just want to make sure he's adjusting well.

  • @jadeddragon212 I mean, when it jumps, is it screaching or chirping? That's a good sign. If the budgie tucks its feathers in and it looks skinny, with big bug eyes, then it's scared.

  • @bluefalcon916

It was chirping...I'm glad that's a good sign but I never heard it screech until today. I bought a new bird home to keep it company and, screeching seems to be its thing now. I hope they get along though...the new budgie is SUPER friendly whereas the first one is turning out to be really grumpy, lol.

  • @jadeddragon212 happy to hear it was chirping. Are they both boy budgies? You can tell the sex of a budgie by the cere above their beaks. If it is blue, they are boys. They'll get along just fine, just give them some time.

  • @bluefalcon916

They're both too young to tell but I'm assuming the first one (Skye) is a female because I heard that the females are bossy and screech a lot. And we can't guess what the second one (Emerald) is because he/she is REALLY quiet. But I must ask another question though (srry, really new at this)...How soon can you let them out of the cage? They seem really bored in there.

  • @jadeddragon212 Hah - It's alright, happy to help. :) Search "Budgie" on wikiepedia or a google search for more info.

As for taking out of the cage, are they comfortable with your hand inside their cage? Usually tho, the younger the budgie the tamer it is since it doesn't really have many fears lol, it's just curious. The older it gets, it develops a personality and doesn't want to be handled much.
