The original Zanac for the MSX is my favorite game ever! This is the prequel to the Nes/MSX2 version, but I like the original because it's harder and more satisfying every time I beat it. The graphics ain't much, but you'll be too busy to notice when you're playing. The gameplay is very simple, all you have to do is shoot everything around you. You got two buttons: 1) main gun and 2) secondary weapon. Your main gun can be powered up to 5 levels by collecting power chips, but you get no super shot like in the Nes version. The secondary weapons are the same if you play the Nes, but they can't be powered up. So you can't cruise through this game on 1-life using a max'd Weapon-Zero. There are also no Red Randars or special Totems that max your weapons, no fairies, no continues, and there's only 8 Rounds + 1 hidden. Also, if you failed to destroy the stronghold at the end of each round, you're forced to repeat the round over again on greater difficulty. If you haven't play this already, then do yourself a favor and please try it. I highly recommend it!
--------------------------------------------

How to reach Round-Zero:

STEP1: In Round 1, destroy the 1st and 2nd boss.
STEP2: After defeating the 2nd boss, there will be a regular totem and then a "smiling totem". Shoot the "smiling totem" to release the eraser. Wait until the eraser turns black, and then fly into it.
STEP3: In Round 2, defeat the 1st boss, and shoot the next "smiling totem". Two erasers will appear. The 1st eraser leads to Round 1. The 2nd eraser leads to the beginning of Round 2. You want to take the 2nd eraser/warp.
STEP4: After warping, immediatly fly down to middle, but stay a little to the left. The next totem is invisible. A good time to shoot is when the "Round 2" title appears. When the eraser appears, wait for it to turn into warp and take it to Round-Zero.

Round-Zero is no walk in the park, I think its the hardest stage in the game. You enter the round, with very few lives and this place hardly provides powerups. Every flying enemy makes an appearance here including the very badass Golgos and these blinking purple boxes which I can't recall its name. Anyway, those purple thingies are tough as the Gizas and worse is they hound your ass all over the place. Either destroy them or wait untill they leave. If you manage to survive it'll take you directly to Round 8, the final stage.

Tip: If you need more lives take the warp to Round 1 using the 1st eraser mentioned in STEP3. Repeat the whole process switching between Rounds 1 and 2 until you have enough lives to survive Round-Zero.

  • Oh, very nice. I didn't know that. I used to go to round zero on MSX by finishing the game then continue from the last round "ESC + Space bar". I really like this Zanac.

  • I never knew about the "Esc + Space bar". When do you press those buttons, is it during the ending credits?

  • Interesting. In NES and MSX2 version, special weapon 2 breaks a hell loose!

  • It also happens in the MSX1 too. When you pickup #2, the difficulty increases to high and a harder enemies appear like the Golgos or Ghogos that shoots 5 sigs. But for some reason it didn't happen I recorded this.

  • Dunno what's so special about that weapon?

  • Nothing really, it has no other purpose but frontal defense.

  • why would he choose fire 2 when he could have used 7?

its the one thing i use ...

  • This shmup was ahead of the game back then. Not many games of that period had a wide variety of power ups :)

  • As much as a hate the term "PWN", MSX was back then the gaming plataform that PWNED all the others, I got to admit.

  • Superior , fucking superior

  • I know on the NES version, the game would track how many shots you fired. After so many shots, a satellite would come out and if you failed to shoot it, the difficulty would get harder.

  • Not sure if it was Zanac, or Zanac Ex, but I recall difficulty also increasing when you used a joystick with auto-fire :)

  • the first soul u took at the beginning is no longer there lol i don't know why
