Wow... my first tutorial...

Automated Smooth Stone Generator

- Switch to turn on and off the generation
- Switch to turn on and off the block length limiter (and you can make it longer if you wish)

I actually discovered that smooth stone can now be generated about a week or two ago, while I was trying to fit a compact cobble generator outside of a spider spawner in my abandoned mines. But I was too lazy to do anything about it, until we happened to have a network upgrade (faster upload!), plus I saw 777static777 demonstrating a very nice and compact manual generator; so I thought I would make one and share :)

Note: the "lave-updating-before-water" problem can be very easily fixed by placing one solid block in the "generation chamber", this block will get pushed out along with the smoothstone column. :)

  • It stop after a few time version 1.1 just after 1.0

  • @RaldJaiMe1358

Hmmm.... Well, I haven't updated to 1.1 so I can't test this out yet, but I'll certainly have a look after I update to 1.1

Currently I'm working on automated tree farm :P

  • @avatarxs

I've just updated to 1.1 a few days back, so I ran some test on this issue; so far I've only managed to experienced one "blockage" (lava updated before water) in the process of harvesting a few stacks of stone. It is very easy to fix, you simply place any solid block in the "reaction chamber", and it will reset itself.

I think the problem comes down to how Minecraft updates the world - I'm having quite some problems with my automated tree farm because of this inconsistency...

  • @avatarxs i have not encountered the problem lately, but i also have not used the generator for a while - but maybe its a typical orientation problem

  • @suit1337

Did you build my version? After reading your comment, I thought maybe it is an issue related to the 1.0 since I haven't tested this design in 1.0; but I've just now completed some stress test, and I did not once encounter the issue you described? And same goes for my clock-based double-row generator, no problem at all... Maybe it's world related?

  • @avatarxs i built a few automated smooth stone generators - but everyone will have the same problem after some time of operation, lava will flow into the chamber before the water and a cobblestone is generated one block in the waterway

i built lots of different designs, manual, with clocks or with block detectors - but the all get the same problem - some have hunderds operations without a problem, some with the same design will fail after 5 operations - so i switched back cobble :)

  • @eXjeetzZ No, you get smooth stone with Silk Touch. It allows you to mine the block itself, not the resource it drops. Bookshelves drop bookshelves, smooth stone drops smooth stone, glass will actually drop glass (Yes, it does.) and in prerelease 4 I picked up a couple of mob spanwers...

  • @eXjeetzZ it's part of the new enchanting system in 1.9

check out enchanting on the Minecraftwiki, very useful stuff :)

  • @avatarxs silk touch pick? what is that?

  • @eXjeetzZ

The advantage is the mining time is greatly reduced.

As for Silk Touch, if you have a Silk Touch pick, you can indeed get smooth stone.
