They serve the purpose of keeping our feeble minds preocupied with a sudo war. They have no real purpose other than to give americans the feeling of purpose.

I'm assuming it's an attempt to lower supply at the source hoping that the price rise by the time it gets to developed nations streets will be much greater. Drug campaigns which focus on the demand side (drug education) create a problem in that as demand goes down, the drugs get cheaper, hence making them more easily available to more people. Focusing attacks on the supply side on the other, increases prices and reduces availability.

MikeT2005 - I've just added a link in the info about the video for more on the figures. Surprisingly, actual Afghan opium production figures since 2001 contradict your thesis. British troops have, in fact, overseen a massive leap from 185 tonnes the year before we invaded to 8200 tonnes in 2007. But, at the same time, the Afghan operation has achieved 93% of global market share in opium. By any business standards, this is an extraordinary success.

It's not being sold to make codeine/morphine/etc?

MikeT2005 - Sure, why not? Why would Afghan opium be any less suitable for conversion to pharmaceutical derivatives than the licensed opium produced in say Turkey. This year's 8200 tonnes definitely sounds like kind of quantities adequate for mass production of codeine, morphine and other prescribed derivatives.
