Three physicians discuss the importance of participating in the newly launched CORHIO health information exchange in central and eastern Colorado. Also included is the story of a Grand Junction resident who compares and contrasts her family's recent experience dealing with a serious illness that included receiving health care locally in Grand Junction, where most providers participate in health information exchange through the Quality Health Network (QHN), and the specialized care they received in Denver where health information exchange was not previously available. Health information exchange, or HIE, is a method to electronically move patients' health and medical information--in a secure, HIPAA-compliant way--between doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers when it is needed for patient care. Secure HIE allows patients and physicians to make sure that health information is available when and where it is needed, improving care coordination and quality while reducing costs and treatment delays.
