Students from XinXing Academy, Hopkins Public Schools' Chinese immersion program in Eisenhower Elementary School, sang in the lunar new year, Tuesday, February 9, in excellent Mandarin. One hundred and forty students in kindergarten through 2nd grade filled the Hopkins High School auditorium stage. Friends and relatives came from near and far to see this celebration of Chinese culture, and to hear the children speaking and singing in Chinese.
Through the support of a grant from the Confucius Center at the University of Minnesota, the students were taught Chinese dances by Teng Lili, the director of the Chinese American Association of Minnesota (CAAM) Dance Theater. Gong Fu instruction, also funded by the Confucius grant, was taught by Coach Huang Ningsheng, as part of the XinXing Academy physical education curriculum in 1st grade and 2nd grade.
Zhining Chin, Ph.D., Hopkins' assessment coordinator, who is originally from China, played a lead role in planning this cultural celebration and teaching the students about the design of Chinese celebrations.
The Year of the Tiger is off to a great start at XinXing Academy.
