This interactive exhibit puts visitors in control of a Martian tornado, or "dust devil." By carefully controlling the speed and direction of wind patterns, visitors create and control a beautiful vortex of fine dust. With careful control, they can achieve multiple and concentric vortices and other patterns that appear fleetingly in nature. The pattern left in the dust when the vortex moves over it is also beautiful.

  • That is technically not a dust devil but oh well

  • I know what you mean re. the mist tornadoes. They are relatively easy to produce. But this is a true tornado that is picking up fine dust from the bottom of the chamber. We had to use very fine glass micro balloons to get it to work at low air velocities.

  • Woot to the first comment but that's not a dust devel. Dust devils form when warm updrafts meet prevaling winds and begin to rotate. And they suck up dust. This machine is technically a mist devil.

  • This is actually dust, not mist. It is extremely fine glass particles.
