Alexander's Ford in Polk County NC along the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail played a very important role in our nation's history and fight for independence. The site is to become a national park and nature preserve.

  • My Mullins, Sherrill, Dillard, et al. other ancestors were among the Patriots at King's Mtn. -- fighting their Loyalist brothers, cousins, and fellow British Americans in our First Civil War.

  • On 10 Sept. Ferguson paroled a relative of Shelby and sent the "fire and sword" message. After their defeat at Cane Creek on the 12th, McDowell and Hampton joined the others at Watauga. Shelby dispatched messengers to plan a rendezvous at Sycamore Shoals on the 25th. The rest is history. But, if Col. Lacey hadn't informed the patriots at Alexander's Ford, that Ferguson had crossed back over Broad River, they would not have caught up to the Loyalists at Kings Mountain.

  • The trailheads at Abingdon, Virginia and Elkin, NC are also historic centerpieces! Don't forget the contribution of Col Benjamin Cleveland and the Surry Militia. The backstory of this story and post story of the American Revolution are equally important.

  • Alexander's Ford is largely just a way point along Overmountain National Historic Trail - the historic centerpiece is Sycamore Shoals in Elizabethton, Tennessee were the 1,100 Overmountain Men (in reference to the Patroits actually crossing over one of the highest ridges of the Appalachian Mountains at Roan Mountain, Tennessee) actually assembled for muster on September 25, 1780 and 600 of the 2000 men fighting the Battle of Kings Mountain were from the Watauga Settlement at Sycamore Shoals.

  • Thank-you for making this video. My GGfatherx5 was Captain Joseph Cole of Washington Co., Virginia. He fought ( and his brothers) at the Battle of Kings Mountain. His direct ancestor was James Cole of Plymouth, Mass. in which Cole's Hill was named after and many pilgrims were buried and Plymouth Rock sits. God Bless our Patriots!

  • Excellent.
