  • I wonder if their cars had specially built casings for their HUGE BALLS.

  • The person interviewing Mario not Econimaki but actually David Letterman (yes...that David Letterman)

  • John Glenn wrote briefly about the pace car wreck in his book. He truly has nine lives. 3 tours of combat duty in 2 wars (returning multiple times with huge holes in his airplane), two near deaths as a flight test pilot, an iffy Atlas rocket launch, an iffy Space Shuttle mission, a shaving accident (which resulted in his only real injury) and this Indy 500 crash. He's still alive.

Just check my channel. You'll see it there, beginning with the qualifying coverage from Indy 500: The Classics 1973 episode all the way through all the tragic events of the race, with the ABC broadcast in tact. It's in a 14-video set.

  • What is more important than winning the INDY 500? Bringing a 1971 Dodge Challenger to a safe stop after 100+ m.p.h. speeds! No anti-lock,4-wheel disc:(

  • I grew up in Indy! David Letterman was our local ABC weatherman in the early seventy's.

  • This is amazing. I never thought I would get to see the TV Broadcast of the '71 Indy 500. U Tube is a real time machine.

  • This was not the first time that an edited version of the Indianapolis "500" was shown on network TV the evening of the day the race took place, contrary to popular belief.

In 1954, a half-hour of filmed highlights of that day's Indianapolis "500" was edited together in-time for it to be fed from Indianapolis to the ABC television network for showing that evening in prime-time.

But the 1971 effort, commercials included, was a two-hour show.

  • I didn't know Jackie did colour before he retired. He hasn't got his high pitched wee Scott thing down yet.

  • @fueldragster Jim McKay corrected himself at 14:50

  • Who the hell is Dave Letterman, he'll never last in this business :)

At first i thought it as Dan Gurney, don't think he was doing TV sports yet.

  • I know it was a sad race but is there a way of getting the 1973 indy 500
