I stumbled upon a video (on YouTube) of Sawyer tying his pheasant tail. Evidently he DOES wrap the flank over the copper thorax, so my apology for saying otherwise. How Sawyer finishes off the fly, however, departs slightly from Edwards' way, as he does two half hitches in front, then lashes the flank back over the thorax, clipping it close. This latter departure seems consistent with Edwards' ommission that he's not sure exactly how Sawyer completes the fly. Kind regards.

This is an excellent video, agree, but a few differences exist between Edward's tie and that of Sawyer. On Sawyer's the copper thorax is entirely visible. On Edwards' the pheasant flank covers the thorax. Secondly, Sawyer finished the fly by tying off first at the eye and then, upon folding the wingcase over the thorax, once more at the rear of the thorax. (If one looks closely, he'll see a short stub where Sawyer clipped the remaining flank feather.) At any rate, both are great ties! Thanks.

An excellent and precise vid of how to tie this classic fly. Attention to Frank Sawyers technique, and consideration of trouts teeth! Well done mate! So many tying vids on here are slap dash, vague and make do!
