http://www.ted.com Inspired by an abalone shell, Angela Belcher programs viruses to make elegant nanoscale structures that humans can use. Selecting for high-performing genes through directed evolution, she's produced viruses that can construct powerful new batteries, clean hydrogen fuels and record-breaking solar cells. At TEDxCaltech, she shows us how it's done.

@brockpickitup profit is not the problem. the problem comes when one uses the profit for selfish reasons instead of reinvesting in the benefit of the group. if its kept for selfish reasons, then the profit becomes an advantageous gain, creating competition, and competition gives rise to comflict. do I make any sense? lol

I realize this comment is over a year old, but you make a great point. I say step one is letting go of the concept of profit. We, as people, do what interests us for the good of all, which will extend to the good of ourselves. It's a fundamental change in human behaviour. Your thoughts?

She grew a battery. It's a living organism, but it's function is the same as a Duracell AA.
