All of us at Spruce Meadows, and in the horse sport community, are stunned and saddened by the passing of Hickstead. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Eric, the Fleischhacker family, and Eric's entire team.

As fans we can be thankful that some of their greatest moments together took place at Spruce Meadows, including their incredible 2011 season, where they firmly established themselves as #1 in the world in the Rolex Rankings.

Hickstead and Eric Lamaze are truly one of the greatest combinations in the history of our sport.

  • I'm gonna miss you Hickstead...you may have gotten over those jumps here on earth without wings, but now you can truly fly.

  • A champion in every sense of the word. I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch this horse (albeit not in person) in action. In 20 years we'll all still be raving about this horse, just as we still rave about Big Ben now. Who knows what Hickstead may have accomplished had his life not been cut short...

  • Hickstead was the horse of a lifetime for Eric, I'll never forget Beijing, hair-pinning turns with hat/eyes/tail on fire. Jumping the standards, he was a tricky horse to turn in the beginning, if I recall.

Incredible horse, amazing partnership. Thanks for the memories, and thanks to Verona, what a classy gesture. So nice to see in any sport, but especially mine!

I quit coffee in Aug 2008,when Eric & "Sticks" won gold. Didn't miss it at all, watching them!Like a dragon, flaming around the ring.
