This is the trailer of an one-hour film shot in digital format in 2005. The goal is to make kabuki more accessible to the general public. Currently it is only shown in selected movie theaters across Japan. I hope they will one day show it overseas. See http://www.asahi.com/english/Herald-asahi/TKY200604140121.html for more information on this film.

  • I wish there was more Japanese entertainment here in England, I find it so beautiful, but there are no theatres or dance schools I know of where I could either see or learn traditional Japanese entertainment. How sad it is to be a small town girl in the middle of England!

  • some kabuki actors performed in London last year.

  • Does anyone know when this was filmed??

Because if it was anytime before 2005, then the Memoirs of a Geisha film ripped them off!

  • Per kabuki21DOTcom website, "The "Heron Maiden" was a role performed by the star Segawa Kikunojô II in a 5-role hengemono, which was staged under the title "Yanagi Hina Shochô no Saezuri" in April 1762 at the Ichimuraza. This role was revived several times, under different forms, by actors like Nakamura Utaemon IV, who performed it in November 1839 at the Nakamuraza. The current version is based on the performance done by Ichikawa Danjûrô IX in May 1886 at the Shintomiza."

  • Sorry I think I've misunderstood your question. This version was filmed in the mid 90s.

  • Could someone get me the lyrics to the song? Yes this sounds weird, but I would like to have it. I'm trying to right it down while it is being sung, but that is making slow progress.

  • I posted a link to the lyrics in the "about this video" section. Can't post URLs in comments.

  • All actors in the play are men, and there is a global history of men also playing female actors.

It allows them to take a step into a woman's shoes, and take the experience. And it is possible on stage. It allows them to act out the elegance of the feminine side from their perspective.

  • That dance at the end was in Memoirs of a Geisha (a very unrealistic movie). I was surprised to see it!

  • @Qandisha You're right. Mr. Marshall blatantly copied Sagi Musume for the "Miyako Odori" scene in Memoirs of a Geisha. It was epically lame...I do wonder if he ever figured out the "chick" in this is a dude. -_____- A very well respected and highly esteemed actor, at that!

  • always loved the male actors playing women

  • A lot of modern Japanese stuff is borrowed from Kabuki. I'm down with the criticism of Memoirs of a Geisha, because that was patronising tripe. But watch a bit of Kurosawa, or even Tarantino - it's all there.

  • What is the name of this movie?

  • whats the song called??? thankya great vid

  • @coocoo4anime The meaning of "musume" is either "maiden" or "daughter". In this case (Sagi Musume), the former.

  • does musume mean museam in japanese???

  • What is this genre of music called, may I ask?

  • 等活畜生(とうかつちくしょう)衆生地獄(しゅじょうじごく)

    あるいは叫喚(きょうかん)叫喚(だいきょうかん)

    修羅の太鼓は隙(ひま)もなく~

  • stimulating.....
