(The BEFORE video!) This VCR tape was made on the day we purchased the Garbutt-Hathaway Estate in Los Angeles, Ca. in 1980. This home was boarded and ready to be torn down. At 15,000 square feet on 36 acres it was one of the largest estates in old LA. Two other homes on the property had already been leveled but the city's history commission was determined to save this one. An agreement was made with the 'new' developer to rescue this home from destruction in exchange for the right to build 96 new homes on the property.
Because of our experience restoring other significant properties the builder agreed to sell us the home on the condition that it would be completed within one year; as the city would not issue any 'occupancy permits' for the new homes until we completed restoration. We finished in eight months!

This house was used in one of my favorite horror flicks: Superstition (1982) :-)
