The state of nature is a dangerous place. Alex discovers this the hard way, having his favorite food - apples - stolen away from him from a stronger peer. Battle ensues, eventually broken up by the formation of a social contract and both of the men handing their power to use force to the government.

  • Nothing is better than watching philosophy students attempting to fight except for when they get the philosopher on the title wrong.

  • thats defenitley hobbes not locke...... but good job

  • what are the songs?

  • and the government is cute.

  • that's Hobbes guys.

  • Yeah I think you might have your states of nature a bit mixed up? Is this Hobbes, Locke, or Rousseau?

  • great fun! i love videos that make philosophy fun!

  • yeah, second that. Hobbes is the state of war in nature guy - since all men are in a state of war, they enter into covenants that prevent harm to eachother (& similar agreements). In order to enforce these rules, there needs to be a Leviathan, or powerful monarch. Men, then, surrender all their rights to the monarch. The ruler in affect is outside of law, he is the law and remains in the state of nature. Locke's conception is equality and peace in nature - check intro to 2nd treatise on gov.

  • unfortunately this is not an example of locke's state of nature where men are peaceful. It is Hobbes whose state of nature is a state of war.
