Join Richard Dawkins as he takes the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of a giraffe dissection to explain Evolution by Natural Selection to a room full of lovely young Veterinary Students! Highlighted here is the example of the Laryngeal nerve, which in fish enervate the gills, but in mammals, which evolved from fish, now enervates the voice box. Since Natural Selection has no drawing board to return to, and since the nerve served a vital function, it's length was stretched over successive generations to several inches in the case of humans, to several meters in the case of the giraffe! Keep in mind that this nerve comes from the brain and passes within inches of it's destination before traveling, in all mammals, a wasteful and circuitous route around a major artery in the heart before going all the way back up to the Larynx. Demonstrative of our lowly origins as opposed to the arrogantly self-exalted status favored by wish thinkers worldwide.

  • Random evolution vs. Intelligent design is as ignorant as republican vs. demicrat. How about Inteligent evolution. How about In this very moment I am evolving through my actions. Should we debate whether the universe is mostly light or darkness? The point is that when you begin trying to describe infinity you polarize it and the answer isn't positive or negative, It is an endless combination of both. Think for your self! Let Dawkins play his role, and you play yours and only yours! Love All.

  • @DkleinD "How about In this very moment I am evolving through my actions". - Well that ain't the type of evolution we are talking about here. Here it is evolution as the result of many complex processes trough a longer chain of reproduction. You my friend cant as a single individual evolve in that sense but you can of course influence in a way that is positive for the human race as a hole. ( I guess that's what you ment )

    "Think for yourself" - I agree on that one!

    Thanx for commenting :)

  • This isn't correct. Dawkins doesn't know any anatomy.

    The left ascending laryngeal nerve is a branch of the vagus (parasympathetic) nerve. It carries parasympathetic innervation over it's length, reaching the oesophagus and the trachea and the pharynx.

    Clinically, anything affecting this nerve will cause symptoms in these areas.

    ...Wikipedia? Exactly, that well known authority on everything - not!

    Anatomy is a specialist subject of mine. What was being said here is that the length of this particular nerve is functionless and unnecessary.

    This nerve carries parasympathetic fibres along its length and so the extreme length is in fact very useful. Richard Dawkins and Wikipedia are just wrong.

    Go and look up a proper anatomy text on head/neck and parasympathetic distribution instead of Wikipedia.

  • @olrepas You are totally missing the point. Dawkins argues against ID and in that context one can say that this is a perfect argument for a nerve system developed trough millions of years of evolution and not designed by a celestial being that a group of humans created in their mind for maybe 3000 years ago.

    And btw. Have you seen all the references in the bottom of a Wikipedia article? Do i have to point each and everyone out for you?

    Sorry for being lazy and not answering your comment sooner

  • @TheNorwegianSkeptic Any thing is possible (;

  • ser ikke noe norsk sub på denne kompis...

  • How would giraffe neck taste? I'm feeling up for a BBQ

  • To the other responses: Richard Dawkins is just a professor of biology. The people in the video are just making this up. The negative responders are definitely biased towards their faith. They just don't want to live in a real world; they want a world with Santa.
