This is the tale of a little boy
Wandering far from his home
Most of his family were with him then
And nothing but life did they own
Tortured by war in their native land
Their only recourse was to flight
Tracing the path of the sun by day
And led by the north star at night
Onward they pressed to the promised land
Not knowing if that was the way
And none of the children could understand
And this little boy used to say
Hey, hey, hey

Mama , where do we go from here
Mamma, why can' t we stay
Mamma, is daddy very near
Mamma, why do you pray

Down came the winter, the food was scarce
The people were falling like flies
Disease helped starvation make matters worse
And parents resorted to lies
Hush, your mamma will soon be well
Though all they can do is to wait
And one little boy hears the doctor tell
The others he thinks it' s too late
It' s too late

Mamma, he whispers quietly
Mamma, you' re looking old
Mamma, why don' t you answer me
Mamma, your hands feel cold

He rushes out into the chilly night
He can' t beleive what he has been told
The tears in his eyes start to blur his sight
And freeze on his face with the cold
But in the next camp, ther is a mother mild
Who' s mourning a son passed away
And fate brings the cries of the little child
To her just as he starts to say
Hey, hey, hey

Mamma, she knows what she must do
mamma, she thinks of her
Mamma, I must take the place of you
And take him into my care

Mamma, oh oh...

  • By the way, if it's not asking too much, I am also looking for Nana Mouskouri's version of Brahms' famous 'Lullaby" which she released under the title "Melody of Love". Its opening lines is "Hear the birds in the trees, hear the birds softly singing/and the song that I sing is our melody of love/Forever and ever I'll always be true/forever and ever I will always love you..." I had this on tape long ago but don't have it anymore. And just like 'Mama', I can't find it on CD or DVD. Thank you.

  • nana mouskouri Guten Abend, Gut' Nacht

    Is this the same ?

    Found on youtube ...

  • Thank you for being so generous with your time. Indeed, this is the same Brahms lullaby, same tune. But what I was looking for was the one she recorded with English lyrics which I could understand and sing along with. The one that you refer to is in African language, I think, which I don't speak nor understand. But a big THANK YOU anyway for your kind effort. Regards, Fred

  • I too was incredibly sad at the invasion of Afganistan-it made me cry-I had lived through the bombing of Serbia in 99-bombs do not heal-they create hatred. This song is for all the voiceless victims - Nana you heal with your angel voice-God bless you.

  • This was played to us about 30 years ago as a school comprehension excercise. That's how you get kids to hate songs - make them do school work about it!

But, I'm older and (a bit) wiser now, and can look at songs like this with with whole new appreciation.

Struth this is sad! But superb sound quality. I'm sharing it. Thanx for posting.

  • @derequwc I believe the Brahms one "Melody of Love" was on the album "Come with Me" that came out on the Philips label in 1980. That was when I bought it. "Mama" came out in either 1967 or 1968 on the Fontana labeled album, "Turn on the Sun."

  • I have missed this song for 30years since my tape was broken. It never fail to make me cry everytime I heard it .Now I am a mother. The song make me deeply miss my mother .

  • beatiful and very sad too, thank you nana,

  • Nana is simply a legend. Her songs transcend time and age. I frist heard this song- Mama- through a local radio station's 'mid night serenade' Later I herad more of her songs through a French friend -Georges Rondeau. Since then I had bought all her songs I could come across. Each time I listen to Mama, I feel like crying. God bless you Nana.

  • Is this the same folk tune that inmates heard the Greek Jewish women sing before their own terrible demise at Auschwitz? I'm sure I read that they sang 'Mama'-this makes this lovely sad,but hopeful song more poignant...
