YUVA VEENA(scalloped guitar)

Mr.Balu Viswanathan ,son of veena maestro R.Pichumani , is the inventor of the carnatic scalloped guitar christened as 'yuva veena' , since it is the youngestinstrument to emerge in the veena family.This instrument is the result of two decades of research by Mr. Viswanathan and guitar maker T.Vencoba a luthier who runs the famous Madras Musical craft in chindhadhripet ,chennai. This video is an exposition of ragam and tanam playing . The 'yuva veena' is plectrum picked like the guitar .It utilises the basic techniques of guitar and the scalloped fretboard of the veena and thus provides unbridled freedom to the guitarist in creating the dasavitha gamakams (ten types of musical ornamentations) of carnatic music .Mr.viswanathan is a retired staff artist of AIR chennai. He has received top grades from the Air for the western guitar and mridangam (sounth indian percussion instrument). He is also an exponent of Sitar , thus he was able to incorporate some of its architecture into the 'yuva veena' .
