I think "twiddling my thumbs" is what you were looking for. I never heard that other one.
When I went to the oral surgeon to get 4 bicuspids out, he wanted to take out the wisdom teeth too, but my dentist and orthodontist never said I needed to. I think he wanted to do it because it would more than double the bill.
