Stretching immediately after completing a workout can help with soreness for the next day. By stretching the muscles you are aiding in clearing out lactic acid at the end of a session. It also aids in reestablishing correct muscle alignment which can also aid in reducing soreness the next day.

I don't think stretching helps soreness, massaging does a little. The best way to avoid soreness is to use a muscle more frequently. 48 hours to heal a muscle, regardless of soreness (not an indication of muscle damage) Then hit the weights again, bam.
