  • I always feel something special & spiritual about Bruckner's symphonies. I have listened to this composer's works for so many years, but I have never got bored of any of them.

  • sublime

  • For what its worth,I think this is the greatest Adagio in all music!!. I call this "cathedral "music. The build up reaches to the heavenly skies. Beautiful, magnificent orchestra & a great conductor. Brilliant, This should be in everyones collection.

  • what edition did he use? Sounds fabulous !

  • @geschiedschrijver, you are so very right about this. As a recent "convert " to Bruckner's music and Furtwangler, I read many comments harshly critical of Furtwangler's work during the war years. What I ask myself is, "What would I have done?" Was Furtwangler "right" in continuing to conduct concerts for the Nazis and factories workers making the bombs or whatever. I continue to consider what I read and listen to, and have come to no "conclusion" as such. More....

  • I have the recording: Musikvereinsaal in Vienna, October 17, 1944. The Third Reich was already mortally wounded and the germans were more brutal and murderous as ever. Concentrationcamps full with Jews to be murdered. In this recording it is as Furtweangler senses this whole drama. His tempo is so slow, so full of sadness, he puts his whole soul in this performance.. as well as the orchestra. The imminence of disaster can be felt. Easy to talk about him after the war. Different if you live in it

  • I don't know whether this is the 'right' version - but I love it.

  • The adagio from Bruckner 8 is one of the most powerfully moving slow movements I have EVER heard! The sound quality is also awesome considering (As MahlerEnigmatic said) that this is a 60-year old recording. Brilliant!

  • aside from the audience noise, this really isnt bad of an interpetation considering is almost a 60 year old recording; its very comparable to my favorite '89 DG Karajan recording with the same symphony so thanks for posting it on youtube.

  • this mouvement is built as the whole symphonie like a gothic cathedral, the hallowing wideness and the tremendous magnificence all this is focused in wilhelm furtwängler´s great interpretation, but additionally it never sounds static.he goes forward and broadens the musical flow when the music need it.this is very amazing, and especially the intensity of sound is so convincing, really great:))
