Drums Along the Hudson: A Native American Festival and Shad Fest reflects the mission of Lotus Music & Dance to promote multicultural awareness and understanding through outreach to a large public audience. The event, which is the only open-air powwow held in the city of New York, is held annually at Shorakapok (Inwood Hill Park), the site of the infamous "transference" of Manhattan Island in 1626. The sixth annual Drums Along the Hudson will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 from 11:00am to 6:00pm. Lotus Music & Dance, in collaboration with the NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, sponsors the festival to highlihgt environmental, cultural and social issues through music, dance, and Native American heritage. This free, family-oriented festival is expected to build upond the success of previous years in attracting an audience of over 10,000. Lotus Music & Dance also travels to public schools, libraries, universities, community centers and other public venues to teach and perform for audiences of all ages.
Lotus Music & Dance is a performance space, sanctuary, and center of education for traditional and indigenous art forms from around the world. Lotus protects, promotes, and celebrates the world's cultural heritage, so often unwritten, keeping the music and dance traditions of endangered world cultures alive and accessible.
