I was deeply saddened when Redwall author Brian Jacques passed away unexpectedly this January. I hadn't picked up one of his books in years, but Martin the Warrior, Basil Stag Hare, and all the rest were a defining part of my childhood. By sixth grade, I was even writing and publishing a fan magazine in my classroom; it lasted eight issues and boasted five subscribers.
Jacques was a presence in the Liverpool folk scene long before he started writing yarns about rodents with swords, and he later filled his books with his own wonderful ditties. This is one I've been singing for almost ten years, a ballad from THE TAGGERUNG about that regiment of gallant hares, the Long Patrol. The tune is a modified version of "The Trooper and the Maid."
So beautiful I still cant believe he's gone :(

FYI. Brian Jacques died on 5 February. Not January.

Add Boorab's wild, flamboyant instrumentals and speed it up and I can totally imagine Cregga dying to this. It makes me want to attempt the "home singin'" song from the same book.
