This is a Tommy Bolin guitar solo from the Zephyr era, possibly the earliest footage of Tommy Bolin available.
According to a reliable source, this is probably Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

  • If this was the Santa Monica show, it was Bolin's last with Zephyr, who were opening for Mountain. I was there and it was an incredible experience. The whole band was on fire, and it was a classic performance by Tommy.

  • Someone who keeps track of stuff like that told me Zephyr possibly played Santa Monica on two different occasions. There is some discrepancy with dates but it could also be just a mislabeled tape. I really don't know if this is from the final show or not. There is a recording circulating labeled 8-11-70 Santa Monica, while I think the final show was in March of 71. This solo is different than the show labeled 8-11-70, so it might be the last Zephyr show, but I do not know.

  • Great solo Tommy !!!!!

  • I have to say that i cant thank you enough..Im from Sioux City, IA where Tommy was born and all thru my childhood all the way til now I'm 25..I've heard stories from old timers that hung out with & knew Tommy including Johnnie his brother and how amazing he was. I've spent the last 18 years listening to Tommy and looking at pictures, smoking at his gravesite every year and being fortunate enough to jam and hang out with johnnie Bolin but never have I been able to see footage of him, Thank you!

  • These old tape delays were a blast to play with. Bolin has really done some masterful work with one in the performance. I have a few old Echoplexes and Roland Space Echoes. This is a killer solo. You did not have tap tempo back then, and really had to be one with the guitar, machines, and equipment to pull this type of thing off. Tommy was so brilliant. Todays stuff is pretty lame in comparison. Now the equipment is so much improved, but the artisanship is kinda gone.

  • @70drok Some promoters were not very kind to people with any kind of recording device at a live show back in these days. The bands and record execs were against it for piracy/copyright reasons. A lot of great stuff went unrecorded. The Dead was pro live show recording, and would help some of the more sophisticated guys set up. They were the exception to the rule. This is grainy, but sounds great compared to some of the bootleg stuff I have heard. It is the sound that is most important to me.

  • @JohnnyVisionquest @jonsilence This dude blows me away every time i hear something new by him. Seeing him do it, well hats off to who ever filmed this, and saving it . Shame its so grainee but wow. Thanks for posting.

  • Tommy went way to soon !!!

  • Wonderful. A nice historical document of a true pioneer.

  • Cell phone cameras have come a long way.
