This fine story is quite supernatural. We are lead to infer that the old man has lived since the 18th century and the poignant ending (a motif repeated in Haunter of the Dark) is a reflection of Poes Fall of the House of Usher. In Haunter of the Dark, the narrator is explicitly linked in spirit with the monster; in Picture in the House, we can infer that the old man is analogous with the anthropomorphized old house.
