Neil, Robert, Matthew and Justin come all the way from the county of Kent. They reside in Dover and Broadstairs. Four years ago when England nearly fell but n the end qualified for the World Cup 06 in Germany, it was a lucky coincident that got them to Dortmund in the first place. They won tickets for WC matches in Kaiserslautern and the jackpot when being drawn for the match Brazil vs Japan at Dortmund's mighty Westfalenstadium. And so, some three years ago, for the first time they made the trip over to Dortmund and saw the match sitting on the Westtribüne. The 4 were impressed by the atmosphere and the mighty roar the spectators created. They were deeply touched by the friendship and passion involved in Dortmund. After the match they celebrated amongst the many nations on Friedensplatz and the old market square. And it hit them, we need to come back and see a Borussia match. We need to see that ground packed with 80.500 Dortmund fans.

And so they followed Borussia on the internet or when Setanta would bother to show one of our matches on TV. They read everything they wera able to get hold off about the club and its fans.. They had a reoccurring thought: We need to go to Dortmund, see them play. On March, 7th 2008 during the Doll-Depression they packed their car, crossed under the Channel, drove all the way from Calais through Belgium and the Netherlands. Their direction: Dortmund, Westfalenstadium! On some service area in Belgium they met the first bunch of Borussia supporters. A lasting memory. What is this club about? Why would someone travel all the way to see a mid-table team play? They were just a few hundred kilometers away from the truth. Even with what schwatzgelb.de then called "a overall pretty boring Friday Night Match" against Hertha Berlin. Kehl and Pantelic hit one each to make it 1-1 all in the end. The most spectacular scene of the match being a red card against Pantelic that never was shown in the end. A day on they had tickets for a lousy 1-1 in Duisburg. Rostock and Duisburg both battled relegation, without any success as we can recall now.

But it was that day they finally lost their hearts, not to Liverpool, not to Arsenal or Spurs and not to Tottenhaum. A dismal Friday night made the difference. The club that back then was positioned on 13th spot in a league nobody really took notice off. On their way back they made plans on coming back to Dortmund as soon as time would allow them to. They bought old Borussia kits on ebay and downloaded Borussia tunes on the net. "With an hour to go on the Autobahn, Robert'll put on the CD and we'll sing along" they say. Already five times this season. Getting up at four in the morning, getting home at 10pm. Inbetween some ten hours of driving, a couple of Bratwursts at the Strobels, mingling with fans, a good Dortmund beer and 90min full of passion.

Schwatzgelb.com met up with the four lads at Strobels before the match against Hamburg. And took them to the railway station Westfalenhalle. Over a bottled beer we talked about the differences between German and English football, how they indulge their passion and of course about that team from the ugliest city in the world. "Always the bridesmaid never the bride"

  • Great guys, you got all my respect! I`m doing it the other way round: seeing each single home match of Borussia Dortmund and travelling to see West Ham once a month aswell. Will bring my friends from London to Dortmund next season, I`m sure they`ll like it as much as you do! Would be great to meet you one day, keep up the black and yellow faith! ;-)
