My personal favorite choir would have to be John Rutter's group, The Cambridge Singers. For some reason, their tone, texture, color, and balance make for a world class group! God Bless The Cambridge Singers!

Polyphony has to be the best professional choir I've ever heard. Especially their interpretations with Stephen Layton! Agh!

The words are from an anonymous "macaronic" (ie a mixture of English and Latin) poem of the 13th century. Britten only set three of the five verses.

interesting. This is not the clear as a bell staright sound that Polyphony usually has in Whitacre's music. Difference of interperetation based on composer I guess.

@emmapduk My mother sang at Both Britten Funeral and Peers Funeral and I believe the Hymn to the Virgin was performed at both; she was a member of a small group called the "Suffolk Singers" and I believe their story is told in a book called "Voices by the Sea" by Wilfred Wren

Thank you for posting!! I have this track but it was unlabeled. Now I know who sings it!
Polyphony always has a way of making your jaw drop when you listen to their music. They do great justice to Eric Whitacre's music as well as anything else they perform. Truly amazing!

Great performance! Actually, Britten was only 16 when he composed this. (August 1930.) Just before leaving home to become a pupil at the Royal College of Music in London! (I've always thought of this piece as a love declaration to his mum. Thank you and farwell dear mother! ) Greeting from former secretary of the Britten Society in Sweden!
