  • I just realised this. How do steamboats turn?

  • That's a great question Matt. I've only seen it going straight ...

  • how LOUD Is The Whistle

  • Tony, The whistle? It's very loud. Passengers never miss the ride! I've heard of a lady who was swirling a glass of wine, and the glass shattered. Like the tenor Enrico Caruso incident.

  • what kind of mic did you hook up to the Sony dat, or does it have one built in?

  • It does not. I used an Omnidirectional microphone.

  • @Mattsmafia

They have rudders at the stern, plus when they want to turn on a river they can e.g.keep their stern tied to the dock and let the current catch their bow and push it out to the river and downstream, Then the stern rope comes off and the boat starts, sideways first, then with the wheel turning and the rudders deflected, turn downstream.

The boats on the Elbe now have bow thrusters that can assist.

  • @Rdabdoub Modern-day steamboats have thrusters below the water level, much like cruise ships. Originally, they would maneuver by using the rudders behind the paddlewheel.

  • @Mattsmafia they've got rudders, just like any other boat.

  • Thanks Paul,

Definitely a trip to the past. New Orleans has always been one of the most musically fecund cities. The steam whistle is part of that global symphony. Not forgetting she is also one of the most fragile cities in America. We are lucky that with the help of so many, we can still enjoy these little gems.

  • hi she is just majestic love the steam whistle too the trolly trams are nice too
