This video highlights some of the Bell & Howell 8mm movie cameras from my personal collection.
The first camera in this video is a B&H one nine. I purchased this camera on Ebay. The camera has never been used, still in the plastic bag when I received it. The seller indicated that he had to break the large staple that held the box shut. The second camera in this video is another B&H from the same era. The last B&H in the video is a zoom reflex model 315. I also own a Minolta Autopak 8 D-6 Super 8mm camera that I use for making movies. I have them processed then returned. I watch the movies on a B&H projector. The current stock for Super 8 is Ektachrome 64T. The movies when projected yield amazing colors and textured. There's nothing like filming your family on real organic film, then showing them the results on a projector. Film to me is much nicer than any modern camcorder. It can be expensive and that's why I only shoot a few Super 8 cartridges each year. Regular 8mm film can also still be purchased. Reg 8mm film comes on a spool, and Super 8mm comes in a cartridge form.

  • One of the best cameras for shooting Regular 8mm is the Bolex P1. What a camera that is. If you haven't seen one, do a Google or Ebay search.

  • Also if you decide to shoot regular 8mm film in older cameras like these Bell & Howells you will need to use a Neutral density filter with a 0.3 factor. The ND filter reduces the amount of light that reaches the film. The higher ASA of 100D makes the film more sensitive to light. When these Bell & Howell's were new 25 and 40ASA was more common. You will also need to manual set the Fstops. Use the sunny 16 rule for manual exposure. A 0.3 ND filter will reduce the Fstop by one.

  • @shane8mm I've got a Bell and Howell Two Twenty and would indeed like to use an ND filter. But the lens is TINY! I believe the filter thread size is like 16 or 17 mm, maybe 5/8". Any idea where to get a filter to fit that? Thanks!

Hello, A Google search might be helpful in locating a ND filter for this camera. Size wise I am not sure? Do you have a local camera shop in your town that might be able to help you? Sometimes camera shop can also order in weird sized items. Also try B&H photo in NYC. Google them and check out their page. If you don't see a filter that small ask them. Good luck and I hope this helps! Or you could try buying a newer style camera with a bigger lens.

  • New film can still be purchased online for regular 8mm movie cameras. Kodak uses an Ektachrome 100D daylight balanced film for super 8mm. The 100D film for regular 8mm is sold by several independent sellers, but not by Kodak any longer. A good place to get 8mm and super 8mm film is Dwayne's Photo. The 100D for Super 8mm was just released by Kodak.
