This is the fallout of religion. People will continue to argue over which religion is the true path and there will always be division. Religious extremism can't exist without the religion itself. Some people need faith to validate their existence so the problems will never really go away. Greed, ignorance, division; it's our fault as humans. Sadly, it's who we are.

Are there any Afghans today interested in returning to Buddhism? Compare Afghanistan now under Islamic oppression, and ancient Afghanistan when it used to be strongly and voluntarily Buddhist.

From my observation, anywhere Abrahamic religions such as Islam (which's from the middle east desert) go, massacres happened, & local heritage & culture destroyed. Whereas, anywhere Buddhism came, people prospered, & local heritage & culture flourished. I think when you believed in Islam which is founded thru brigandage and wars, you become hypocritical, blinded, unwise, stupid, narrow-minded and EVIL.
