From what I here Varner is actually winning the battles in the wrestling room now. On the world stage Varner’s weight class is by far the toughest of any weight. There is no such thing as a lucky draw in that weight. Herbert place second in an off year where the majority of the studs were taking time off. I Think Cael did pretty well considering the layoff and rule changes.
@paver1surf11 Do you think any of those guys can score on him at practice? Were you surprised Varner got 3rd and Cael only 5th? Herbert got a silver in 09 and Cael dominated him...so I guess alot of it at worlds is getting a good draw?
@swimhurl My guess is that he has not even made up his mind yet if he will even go for it. I wouldn’t bet against it though. As for the other guys in the weight I don’t see any of them even near his level unless Gavin has put on a lot of muscle mass since last year. Cael has one of best training partners in the world in Jake Varner and his college guys are pretty darn good too...
@paver1surf11 I think maybe Cael is taking it as a given that he can get through the US guys and qualify for the Olympics..but you have to wonder if he can given that Reader, Gavin, Herbert etc are doing nothing but training and he is wearing a bullseye after his dominance last year.
@swimhurl Not really concerned, if they can beat him at the trials then so be it. One other guy that should be in the mix is Keith Gavin. If he has put on some bulk he could be very dangerous. He is a very smart wrestler that was too big for 74 kilo and too small for 85 kilo. Herbert is a stud but his Achilles heal is his ability to scramble...
@paver1surf11 :( Didn't realize Lewis had a stroke...I had thought he was training in secret to prepare for the trials. Are you concerned that Herbert, Reader, and others are outworking Cael for the 2012 spot?
@swimhurl Cael did not wrestle at the Schultz because it is the final push of the college season. Beyond anything else that is his main priority. I think it is about 50/50 if he even tries for the Olympics. I would put the percentage higher if they win the NCAA tournament.
As for Randy I don’t see him ever competing again. He had a mild stoke this year.
1. Cael Sanderson. Why didn't he enter the Schultz tournament and how seriously is he taking the 2012 Olympics?
2. Randy Lewis. How serious is he about unseating Jordan Burroughs at the trials this year if he hasn't competed since 09 and was embarrassed by a chump like Moza Fay?
@swimhurl I agree on Alton being right in the mix this year. It will be interesting to see if he has the freshman burnout that happens to many first year wrestlers. By the time conference finals and NCAAs roll around they are pretty beat up and still dealing with weight management issues...

@paver1surf11 So you wouldn't be shocked if Sanderson doesn't compete, given his dominance last year?
