This was one of Marc's first appearances on a compilation CD. The songs on the album were meant to be inspirational for the US Olympic Team and "Old Soldier" is no exception. Though this is the first release of "Old Soldier", it was also released on a single and was a favorite of Marc's at live venues.

"Barcelona Gold" was released by Warner Brothers and contains the following tracks. There was something for everybody on this compilation:

1 - Freddie Mercury / Montserrat Caballé - "Barcelona"
2 - Tevin Campbell - "One Song"
3 - Anita Baker - "How Fast How Far"
4 - D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - "Higher Baby"
5 - Keith Sweat - "Keep It Comin'"
6 - En Vogue - "Free Your Mind"
7 - Damn Yankees - "Don't Tread On Me"
8 - INXS - "Not Enough Time"
9 - Rod Stewart - "Go Out Dancing"
10 - Travis Tritt - "Texas Flyer"
11 - Randy Travis - "The Heart To Climb The Mountain"
12 - Marc Cohn - "Old Soldier"
13 - Madonna - "This Used To Be My Playground"
14 - Luis Miguel - "No Sé Tú"
15 - Eric Clapton - "Wonderful Tonight"
16 - Natalie Cole - "Love Is Here To Stay"
17 - Jose Carreras / Sarah Brightman - "Friends For Life (Amigos Para Siempre)"

"Old Soldier" by Marc Cohn

Listen Old Soldier
Wherever you are
The hills or the valleys
Come near or come far
They say youth is a treasure
We waste when we're young
So come down from that place
Where your medals are hung
You're forever returning
And yearning to fight
And you feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight...

Listen Old Soldier
'Cause time doesn't wait
The moon's on your shoulder
And the hour is late
And something there inside
Still calls out to you
And you won't fade away
Whatever you do
You're forever beginning
Barely winning the fight
You feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight...

You're not getting no younger
That much is true now
But you still got that hunger
Burning in you now
So what do you do now?

(What do you do now?)

Listen Old Soldier
To the sound in your ears
Of too many battles
Of too many years
But there's only one thing
You've learned in defeat:
That losing is bitter
And victory is sweet
Yeah you're always unravelling
Travelling light
And you feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight
You feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight

  • I remember buying this CD for some of the other songs, not for Old Soldier, which I didn't know. But it was Old Soldier that became my favorite. The David Crosby version is good, too (with Marc on piano I think)...but Marc's version resonates the most for me.
