Great exercise for developing clave. I learned this at a Negro clinic, basically.
Independence/coordination development, going from 8th notes in 4/4 to 8th notes in 6/8 without altering the tempo.
A masterful technique employed by music with West African roots: creating the illusion of slowing down and speeding without the tempo budging at all (there can be pushing and pulling in much of these musics, but I'd develop that ability later).
Like framing a picture with a different frame, changing the frame (subdivision) doesn't alter the painting (tempo), does it?
