About the Podcast:
Celiac disease is a genetic disorder affecting children and adults. It is more common that many people previously believed and causes a wide range of serious health problems.

People with celiac disease are unable to eat foods that contain gluten, which is found in wheat and other grains. For many years, researchers have been working diligently to find the cause of this disease and better treatment options for patients suffering from it. Currently, the cure is to strictly avoid eating any gluten-containing foods.

Speaking with Becky Ceraul, UMMC pediatric expert Dr. Alessio Fasano discusses celiac disease -- its causes, symptoms and treatment options.

About the Expert:
Dr. Alessio Fasano is a pediatric gastroenterologist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Hospital for Children.
