This is how we did the MITO back in the day, BEFORE the colapse of the Soviet Union. These are B-52G's and KC-135A's from the 416 BMW, at the former Griffiss AFB, NY. The Buff with the old "lizzard" paint scheme is piloted by Capt. John Hannen. The loud voices you hear are the maint specialists that stayed up all night getting the air[lanes ready.

  • Glad you enjoyed it. The Global Sheild exercise was actually a new concept in the late 70's in which all SAC aircraft (except alert resources) around the world launched at the same time and practiced their missions. Initiated in 1960, Chrome Dome was real world airborne nuclear alert. After losing nukes over Greenland and off the coast of Spain, and three over the continental US, Chrome Dome was discontinued in 1968.

  • I was a Gunner assigned to DOJT (Tactics Branch) Was there from 84 to 89. Shot this from the overlook on the far side of the runway in 88.

  • You're welcome. I was a Gunner assigned to the Tactics Branch when I took this.

  • You got it. Both the bombers and tankers. A lifting fog that morning added to the sight, although you can't really see it in the video.

  • This video brought back alot of memories. I was in SAC on top of the hill back in !963-65.

The were called Crome Domes if I recall at that time.

  • ASG15IAG- Wondering when this was shot, when were you there, where did you work? I worked Combat Crew Comm/TACOM, 1983-1985, across from the Command Post, issuing Comm Kits, SATCOM info and stuff to Tanker Navs and Bomber EWOs.

  • Brings back some great memories. We were MITO'ing the same scene out of Wurtsmith at the same time and headed north along ALTRV tracks along with several other SAC bases during the Global Shield events. Who remembers 15 second hacks, fan headings, trombone cut off's, and 16 hour Monkey Butt?

  • Awesome video I remember the days hearing these great planes flying around not no

more so sad to see the base leave sure do miss the sights and sounds of these incredible and wicked aircraft

  • I couldnt help but yell, "yeah yeah yeah yeah' at my computer on that.

  • Correction to my previous post: I was in the 9th plane which was a tanker. This was a 15 ship MITO and I remember all we did for a month prior to this was discuss procedures and how the MITO would work. It was a very high pressure exercise for the aircrews and I imagine the support people as well. It was fun to actually take part in the MITO as well.

  • I was in the 9th tanker that day. This video brought back alot of memories. Thanks to whomever posted it.
