This is a fascinating documentary about the film I Am Cuba, the unknown masterpiece that the famous Soviet director, Mijail Kalatosov made in Cuba in 1964. This extraordinary film that was intended to be a propaganda piece for the Cuban Revolution required an unprecedented crew of 200 people who spent two full years shooting in Cuba. However, a week after its release in Moscow and Havana, the movie was taken out of the theatres and disappeared until it was rediscovered in the 90s by Martin Scorsese and Francis Coppola. Through breathtaking shots by Urusevsky from the original film and interviews with surviving Cuban and Soviet crew members, Ferraz investigates the banning of the film. The documentary takes us behind the Iron Curtain, into the Cold War, through the recent history of Cuba, and beyond to the great irony of I Am Cuba, which only the passage of time has been able to reveal.
