The comments echo the nonsense that passes for historical research. Columbus was a great navigator. He was able to complete an unprecedented journey without the benefit of longitude and he was able to duplicate those journeys relying on the system known as dead reckoning, a remarkable achievement. He was a product of his time and certainly had his faults. If you want to read a real biography and a load of revisionist tripe try Samuel Morrison's work "Columbus"
