Ely is a major junction in East Anglia with lines leading out to King's Lynn, Norwich, Ipswich, Cambridge, St Ives (closed 1960s) and March. Also north of the station there is an avoiding line where trains can run from King's Lynn or Norwich and head for March without running through Ely Station. There is also a freight distribution depot at Ely North junction called Papworths which does generate some freight traffic. Ely has 3 platforms and was electrified in 1992 along with a few major changes. In 2007 Ely was served by First Captial Connect with services running to - King's Lynn, Cambridge and London Kings Cross. One - King's Lynn (peak hours only), Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, London Liverpool Street via Ipswich, Cambridge, London Liverpool Street via Bishops Stortford and Peterborough. Central Trains - Norwich, Stanstead Airport, Cambridge, Birmingham New Street, Nottingham, Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street. All these films were made to show all the departures through Ely on an average weekday, since Ely has services running from 05.10 - 01.00 so its not possible to film on one day, with the first visit made on Wednesday 7th March 2007 between 05.10 and 15.00 a second visit was made on Thursday 15th March 2007 between 09.00 and 15.00 to cover the gaps and then there was another made on Monday 26th March 2007 between 09.30 - 18.00 to cover the gaps again, between 11.00 and 12.00 a break was taken as this is already covered so this part was missed out, during this part we see the following trains:
12.14 - Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich, Central Trains, Class 170 111 Turbostar in 2 coach formation at the rear and another Class 170 Turbostar also in 2 coach formation at the front, Class 170 111 in Midland Main Line livery with Central Trains vinyls and the front Class 170 in Central Trains livery, Platform 3.
12.19 - Stanstead Airport - Birmingham New Street, Central Trains, Class 170 117 Turbostar in 3 coach formation, Midland Main Line livery with Central Trains vinyls, Platform 1.
