So...here's my dirty little secret: For the past couple years, deadlifting has hurt my lower back. I know they're great -- one of the best lifts you can do for total-body benefit! -- but *I* couldn't do them without experiencing pain and putting myself out of commission for a week or more. But a few months ago, I started training differently, only doing variations that didn't hurt me, and never pushing through hard reps. I started to (gasp!) enjoy deadlifts again, so when my friend Nia (www.niashanks.com) asked me for a deadlift video tonight, I thought I'd see where I was at for a three-rep max. Here's what happened. Best part: NO PAIN, yet plenty of gain -- my previous one-rep max was 303.
