Introduction to the mission and research of the Center for Amazon Community Ecology. Part 1 of this two part probes the relationship between bark-boring weevils and the insects that provoke the formation of resin on copal trees in the Amazon region and the importance of this resin to bees and forest people. The piece focuses on the Center's copal study at the Center for Investigation at Jenaro Herrera - a research facility operated by the Institute for Investigation of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP).

  • Thank you for the compliments on the video and our work. It's so interesting to learn that you and other midwives have used liquid Mexican copal to help seal newborn cord stumps. Are you still looking for a source for this material? It would be very helpful to the communities we work with to find another market. We would welcome more information (and any images) about the origin of this practice, current use, species of copal used and method of harvest and preparation. Thanks, Campbell

  • Good to see you again, even if it's on youtube, I liked to know the Curculionidae is important to expose the rosin resins for the bees. Cheers, Giorgio.

  • Thank You! The video was excellent! I use mexican copal resin in liquid form for newborn cord stumps, to aid in sealing/healing/antisepsis, using a product obtained from a Mexican midiwife friend. I stumbled across your info. whille looking for a new source for the midwifery product. Keep up the interesting work!
