Yes, you have the right grooving basis. My students are known to be ready by the fourth, five or sixth session. And the secret is all other Cuban rhythms prior to this so called Salsa. They learn first how to interpret the pentagram with their bodies, what to do to satisfy each instrument and its notes, and where that eighth note can hide. They start with Rumba all the way to Guaracha.

I suggest it, Go to Cuba as a vacation and spends your time learning how to dance Rumba, Guaguanco, Son and other basic, later on you'll be able to dance Salsa in any place in this world and actually with any one!
