Dave flies his 30% Pilot RC YAK-54 with a DL-50. He spends the first part of the flight working on some approaches & touch n' goes. As he pulls around the engine (not running at it's best) dies and Dave is left to land his Yak-54 in a field. Although, we did tell him that he should not have done a turn and he could have landed it on the runway safely. The belly landing he did removes the landing gear!

Dave had only been flying model aircraft for 3 months!

Footage shot at the MAM (Minot Aircraft Modelers) flying field just North of Minot, North Dakota on 24 September 2011.

  • It's going to be Okay! Cool plane!

  • @johnw5734 Yeah, it happens to us all... if you fly long enough, you will crash.

  • Great looking plane and an easy fix. Replace that DLE 50 with a DA-50 while you are at. :-) Atleast lean out and high speed on the DLE a little bit and I think it will run better for you.

  • @Hewey19 Dave picked up this air frame, and damaged one and a wore out DL-50 from a guy at a Huck Fest. When Dave got back we told him he got ripped off... then when Dave tried to call and talk to him, he wouldn't answer!!! The landing gear had been damaged by the other guy before Dave bought the plane. You have to know what you are buying... even in our hobby, you can get ripped off. As for the Dl-50, I think he's going to "shit can" it!

  • Hey Dave, happens to all of us. Easy fix, don't give up man just get back in the saddle. I did the same thing to my smaller 120 size Yak last year. They float in like a baby forever as long as your coming in on a level glide plan but you can't turn them in to sharp. Just get it back in the air my friend. By the way, great looking Yak

  • @Luvtoflyhelis he told me " I shouldn't have made that turn"... so he is learning! It's part of the hobby.

  • Nice airplane, but the landing :-/

  • @IRisingFuryI Dave won't fix it right away, not because he can't, but because he quickly moves on to something else. Call it an attention deficit thing! hahahaha Even if he doesn't fix it this season, I've got so many other reasons that I can "smack" him for.

  • @f4chv Dave was a little upset after the crash. Not that he crashed, but because of the poor running engine he had. He knows stuff like this happens in the hobby.

  • @rgthd007 Thanks for the comment. It is true that Dave was moving rather quickly in the hobby. But the most important thing he did is to get the help of fellow club members. He listens to us for the most part (although I did want to smack him a few times).

  • Bin Der Dun Dat more times than I would like to admit!! Extreme Flight 74" Yak-54, Turnigy 50cc.

  • Only 3 months and flying giant scale already??? Well, part of the hobby is learning to fix airplanes. Should have been an easy dead stick landing, but truly nerve breaking on a guy who has flown only so little, while flying such an expensive aircraft. Oh well, nothing a little bit of glue and tender care won't fix!
